The access door off the loading side was propped again tonight, same brick wedge under it as always, and I went in because if it is propped it is an invitation, that is just correct, nobody props a door they mean to keep locked (sorry, I know how that reads, im not the one who left it open). First thing past the threshold is the box. The box has been there longer than ive been photographing this building, gray, dented on the left corner in a way that has not changed shape across fourteen months of me checking it, and it says CONTROL SWITCH stenciled across the top in paint somebody redid at some point because the S in SWITCH doesnt match the rest of the letters. Below that a plate, yellow, 115 VOLTS SINGLE PHASE, and under that a second plate saying the exact same thing smaller, like they didnt trust the first one to hold. two black buttons. one red one. a toggle. my father kept a fuse box that exact shade of gray in our garage when I was a kid and I do not know why that is the thing my head goes to standing in a service corridor at two in the morning, it just does, the mind finds its own detours off a color. anyway. what matters is the cable next to the box, coiled thick as a wrist, and I have counted the loops on four visits now, five if you count the first one which I dont because the phone died before I got a picture of it that night, so four that I can prove, and the count does not change. it is the same coil every time. nothing behind that panel has been switched on in fourteen months that I have seen or heard or felt through the floor.

a cable that goes nowhere gets pulled, or capped, thats maintenance, my brother in law is an electrician and he told me straight out a dead line does not get coiled and RELABELED TWICE like its worth keeping. this one keeps getting relabeled. ive seen it relabeled, same as that exit sign panel that got assigned twice after somebody cut a fresh hole for it, a thing does not get re-designated once it already works unless the first designation was never the point. draw whatever conclusion you want, i already have mine. and the two red lights under the buttons, i never mention these because i forget theyre even there until i go back through my own photos, theyre ON in this visit and OFF in the last one, and i dont have a photo from the visit between the two so i cant tell you when it flipped, only that it did, sometime in there, sometime i wasnt looking. four visits. one flip i cant date. go check your own breaker box if you think wire doesnt hold a memory of what it used to power. mine does. not calling any of this a coincidence. im not going to insult either of us like that.
