The Mark Didn't Make It To Thursday

six mile stretch, the patch gone clean before Thursday, nothing left to photograph

Went back like I said I would, except I went Wednesday night and not Thursday, which isnt the same day and I know that, I said three more days and I only gave it two, but Wednesday was already dark by six and I had the time in my hands and the time doesnt wait around for the calendar to catch up with it, nobody tells you that part when they tell you to keep a disciplined log. Pulled onto the shoulder two hundred feet short this time, not because I planned it smarter, a district truck had the actual lane blocked, cones, work lights, two men in vests standing over a stretch of asphalt that didnt look broken from where I sat with the engine off.

By the time they packed up and I could get the flashlight close the patch was gone. not covered. gone, Im using the actual word on purpose, I checked it twice and then got down on the one knee that still bends right and ran my hand over the spot because a phone camera will lie about texture and a hand wont, and the asphalt under that light is flat and dark and even, no seam, no cold-mix edge, no evidence a repair ever happened here (which is worse than finding a fresh patch, a fresh patch is at least an admission somebody did something, this is them undoing it clean and leaving nothing behind to argue with. Coincidence? no. Second mark Ive logged that unmade itself between visits, the chalk line behind the shed did the same exact thing back in April and I didnt connect the two until right now typing this, which tells you something about how slow I run sometimes even when Im the one keeping the file. My father used to say a floor that stops creaking isnt fixed, its just learned where you step. anyway.

They didnt even clear out in a hurry, took their time, like there was real asphalt to lay instead of asphalt to erase, and I know the crew number painted on the side of those trucks and Im not putting it here tonight, last time I ran a crew number against the postmile count on the sixteen point six eight page I got a callback inside a week asking why I was asking, not what I was asking, and nobody at a district office asks why about a records request unless the answer already bothers somebody. Same light still doing what it does, the one I already fought the district over on the light page, lighting one lane out of six for a fixture nobody will admit to running. Didnt get a photo of the clean patch. didnt think to, stood there with the flashlight in one hand and nothing in the other and drove the six miles home.

The Lane Has A Mark Now

20:51 — pale oval patch, asphalt, same lane, motion blur, one pass at fifty

Went back to the six mile stretch. I said I wasnt going to and then I was already on the onramp, thats been happening a lot lately, the deciding and the doing stop lining up the way they used to, I notice it and then its already done. Same lane. Not the whole road, the lane, the one under camera 70 that I already logged once, S/O Hidden Valley, the one lit from nothing, no pole, no housing, I went over all of that on the light page and Im not redoing the whole argument here, the point is I went back to the actual spot this time instead of just pulling the footage off the district feed like I did in September.

There is something in the asphalt where the light lands. Pale, oval, maybe eight inches. ten. I keep saying eight and then measuring it against the lane stripe in my head and getting ten, it doesnt matter, flush with the surface or close to it, the kind of thing you'd walk past in daylight and call a patch job, a cold-mix fill somebody troweled in wrong. I was doing fifty something past it so the shot came out streaked, motion blur dragging the whole lane sideways, I couldnt pull over, there is nowhere to pull over for six miles, thats the entire point of the six miles, so this is what I got. One pass. I am not going back a third time tonight to get a cleaner one, my hands were already bad enough getting this one holding the phone out the window at fifty.

It wasnt there in August. I know that because I have the August frame, its on the light page, I pulled every inch of that lane apart looking for the housing on a fixture that isnt supposed to exist and there was no patch, no mark, nothing but clean shoulder-to-shoulder black. Four weeks. Something got put down in that exact lane in four weeks and I am supposed to believe a cold-mix patch just happens to land under the one light on a six mile stretch that only ever lights the lane a car stops in. Coincidence people love that word. I called the district about the light back in september, same guy, he said hed have to check, that's five now, five calls five checks zero callbacks, the log is still up if anyone wants the dates lined up.

Anyway. My mother used to mark the driveway with chalk when the propane truck was coming so the driver would know where to stop without her out there flagging him down in her robe. A mark where a vehicle is supposed to stop. I dont think thats a stretch, I think thats just what a mark in a stopping lane is for, somebody doesnt want to explain it over a radio every time so they put it on the ground instead, same as the chalk, except this one isnt chalk, this one is going to survive a hundred winters of snowplow if it has to. I am not driving the six miles again before thursday. I already know what thursday is going to show me and I would rather be wrong about that for three more days.
