The Number That Isnt A Clock
20:56 — CCTV 515 / RIV 10 EB PM 33.11 / At Indian Canyon Rd / 08.04.26 20:56:05
Five fifteen. New number, camera I have never once pulled up before today, District 8 same as always, Indian Canyon Road exit, and I only opened it because 257 and 277 both went dark on me for about four minutes around dinner and I go through the whole list when that happens, every single camera on the page, one at a time, because if two of mine drop at once I want to know what else dropped with them. 515 loaded fine. Both clocks agreed, header and bar, five second lag same as every honest box on that road, I checked the ledger while it was still open in the other tab and wrote it down anyway even though it matched. matching is data too. nobody logs the boring ones and that is exactly the mistake.
What did not match anything is the line sitting above the road surface, small, right justified. plus ninety nine point seven four, minus one point two three, one thousand thirty five. Not a time. I know what a time looks like on these frames by now, ive stared at enough of them, two colons and a period and a district code, this is not that. three numbers, two of them signed, like a coordinate or a tilt reading or something a machine reports to another machine and never expects a person to be looking at. except I was looking at it, so somebody misjudged that.
Postmile 33.11. eastbound. Indian Canyon. none of that is new information, thats just where the pole is. the number above the road is the thing, and I do not have a category for it yet, which is worse than having the wrong category, at least wrong gives you somewhere to start arguing. my neighbor waved at me through her kitchen window while I had this open, second time this week shes caught me at the laptop past eleven, I waved back, unrelated, I only mention it because it happened in the same ninety seconds and I told myself that doesnt mean anything and I still wrote down the time she did it. 23:08. anyway.
Five cameras deep into a list I started in July. no, four, 257 and 277 and 287 and now this one, five if you count the one I only ever mention in passing, doesnt matter, this is the first one that printed something that isnt trying to be a clock at all. 257 lied about the time and then stopped lying, its all still in the clock pages exactly as the frames printed it. 277 and 287 sat twenty apart and then ten. 515 skipped the whole argument and started reporting numbers I dont have an instrument for. I dont know if thats an escalation or a different machine that was never talking to me about clocks in the first place and I only noticed because I was already looking at that stretch of road for other reasons. once I am checking all forty one I dont stop at one, thats not how the checking works, you check the ones that scare you and then you check the rest out of what I guess is professionalism.
Three cameras past where I meant to stop, 525, Golf Center Parkway westbound, and there is a white car parked on the frontage road next to the rail line with nothing else in the frame for a quarter mile either direction. not pulled over, not broken down that I can tell, just stopped, industrial glow behind it doing nothing to explain itself, dead brush in front of it doing the same amount of nothing, no plate legible at this resolution and no reason I can construct out of anything a normal person would construct one out of for a car to be sitting there at five to nine at night with the engine I cant even confirm is running. I did not go looking for this one. I want that on the record, there is a difference between what I go looking for and what finds me on the way to something else, I keep those two categories separate on purpose. both of them get written down tonight and neither one gets an explanation.
