The One That Rings Instead

CCTV 382, SBD-15 SB PM 139.237, 2.5mi N/O Hwy 127

305 doesnt clear, I already put that one up, the fog page is still there if anyone wants to check the dates against what im about to say. 382 is a different camera and it does not fog. 382 rings. Found it going back through the corridor two cameras at a time the way I do now, same as when I measured the spacing to the inch on the 60 and kept going back to check it held, north this time instead of south, and there it was, two lights in one frame and a ring around the little one like water does when something breaks the surface except this doesnt move and water always moves. I counted four rings the first time I looked. Five the second time, same frame, same pull, I dont know how that happens and Im not going to pretend I do, doesnt matter, the count isnt the point, the rings not going away is the point.

CCTV 382, SBD 15 southbound, postmile one three nine point two three seven, two and a half miles north of Highway 127 which is already most of the way to nothing, which is probably why nobody watches this one close enough to notice. 305 backwards is three oh five point six and that matched the postmile digit for digit, I said that already, I know I said that already. 382 backwards is two eight three and the postmile here is 139.237 and those dont match, dont rhyme, dont do anything, and I sat with that for a while trying to decide if it broke the pattern and it doesnt, it just means not every camera rhymes the same way, some of them are doing something else instead. Worse, maybe. Two lights instead of one number. The big one never moves in six days of pulls. only the small one drifts under it, a little left, a little right, like its on a string somebody is holding just out of frame. my porch light does something close to that when the moths get bad enough, doesnt drift though, just gets thick with them until you cant see the bulb at all. my father kept a blue one on for that exact reason, moths dont like blue, he said, I dont know if thats true. anyway.

Called the district line again. same man I think, I cant prove that, voices sound the same on a bad connection and this is always a bad connection. Didnt ask him to explain the rings, I know better by now, same reason I stopped asking about the truck pages months ago, I asked him instead to just confirm the postmile back to me so I had it from someone else's mouth and not only my own notes. He read it back wrong the first time. 139 point 273. Then he caught it himself before I said anything, corrected it to 237 like it was nothing, and I sat there with the phone against my ear thinking about how fast that correction came, faster than a man reading off a screen for the first time has any business being,
